The Lake screens free in Saratoga Springs, Provo paints ladybugs, and American Fork makes rugs
Plus unbeaten UVU men's soccer at home, a Friday planetarium show, and $4.50 baked empanadas in Pleasant Grove.
Good morning, Happy Valley.
Saratoga Springs City Hall turns into a one-night movie theater Thursday, with free appetizers at six, The Lake at seven, and a live Q&A after the credits.
The rest of the weekend moves from a watercolor class in downtown Provo to a rug-making workshop in American Fork and opening night at Cornbelly's in Spanish Fork. We also found a Friday planetarium show, a Venezuelan bakery in Pleasant Grove, and two UVU teams with games this week.

โญ The Big One
Pick of the week The Lake screens free at Saratoga Springs City Hall
The Jordan River Commission brings The Lake to Saratoga Springs Thursday for a free screening and live Q&A. The documentary premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and follows two scientists and a political insider working to keep the Great Salt Lake from disappearing. A reception with complimentary appetizers starts at 6pm, the film starts at 7, and the Q&A follows the credits.
Our take
Go for the conversation after the film. You can hear how the filmmakers and local experts explain a lake that affects the air, snow, and wildlife across northern Utah.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The reception and screening use separate start times. Arriving at seven means missing the appetizers and the easiest time to find a seat.

Utah County reported its first human West Nile case of 2026
The Utah County Health Department reported the county's first human West Nile virus case of the year Monday. The case was neuroinvasive, the more serious form of the illness. The department also says a high number of local mosquito pools have tested positive and recommends repellent, long sleeves around dawn and dusk, and draining standing water near homes.

THURSDAY
Book now Paint a watercolor ladybug with an entomologist
Compass Gallery pairs artist instruction with insect science Thursday evening. Heath Ogden, a professional artist and entomologist, leads a watercolor ladybug class for all experience levels. The $15 ticket includes the class and a signed print.
Our take
Book it if you want an art class with a teacher who can explain the insect you are painting. The signed print makes the $15 price unusually useful.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: This is a scheduled class, not an open-house activity. Arrive ready to start at six.

FRIDAY
Skip unless Make a 30-inch rug at The Rug Room
The Rug Room runs a guided tufting workshop Friday evening in American Fork. The $129 price covers a rug up to 30 by 30 inches, yarn, tools, glue, and finishing. One or two people can share the same rug, and the workshop takes about three to four hours.
Our take
Skip it for a casual Friday plan. Book it when two people want to split the work and leave with one finished rug instead of paying for two seats.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Participants must be at least 14. Ages 14 to 17 need an adult, and everyone needs closed-toe shoes.

FRIDAY
Worth it Cornbelly's opens its Spanish Fork farm for fall
Cornbelly's opens its Spanish Fork location Friday with more than 30 included farm attractions. The current list includes the locomotive train, hay rides, mini golf, a ropes course, rides, and more than 15 acres planted with ten sunflower varieties. Picked flowers cost extra.
Our take
Worth it when the farm attractions matter more than picking flowers. The train, hay ride, mini golf, and play areas are included in the same ticket.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The farm uses different hours and prices by day. Friday's picked sunflowers are an extra purchase.

Utah Valley is 3-0 after another shutout
Utah Valley beat Santa Clara 1-0 Sunday for its second straight shutout and a 3-0 start. Nil Grau scored for the second game in a row, and goalkeeper Jackson Medina recorded his first clean sheet as a Wolverine. UVU returns to UCCU Stadium Thursday night against Omaha.
Madi Standifird had 22 kills in UVU's four-set loss
Utah Valley lost 3-1 to Oregon State Saturday to finish its opening weekend 0-3. Madi Standifird recorded a career-high 22 kills, and the Wolverines took the third set before losing the fourth 27-25. UVU plays at South Dakota Thursday before matches with Northern Iowa and Air Force.

Worth it Guayoyo Cafe, Pleasant Grove
Guayoyo Cafe bakes Venezuelan empanadas in a small Main Street shop. La Tradicional fills one with ground beef, onions, peppers, hard-boiled egg, green olives, and spices. La Exquisita uses goat cheese and mushrooms. Both are $4.50 on the current menu.
Our take
Start with La Tradicional, then add the goat-cheese-and-mushroom empanada. Two distinct fillings make a better first visit than ordering doubles.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: These are baked empanadas, so expect a different crust from the fried versions served at many Latin American restaurants.

Worth it Friday night at BYU's planetarium
The Royden G. Derrick Planetarium runs public shows at 7 and 8pm on Fridays during fall semester. Tickets are sold at the door before each show, and the astronomy club opens its telescopes afterward when the sky is clear. The planetarium sits on the fourth floor of the Eyring Science Center.
Our take
Five dollars buys a full dome show, and a clear night adds a telescope stop afterward. It is one of the least expensive indoor Friday plans in Provo.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Late admission is not allowed. The dark room may not work for very young children.
