A tap dancer and a pianist share the Noorda stage Friday
Plus bucket truck rides in Provo, a free crystal show in Spanish Fork, and Wallace & Gromit in a Lindon park.
Good morning, Happy Valley.
Pianist Conrad Tao and tap dancer Caleb Teicher bring Counterpoint to the Noorda Center in Orem Friday. Teicher's feet work as a second percussion line against Tao's piano, and the program runs from a Bach Goldberg aria to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Earlier in the week, Provo Power gives bucket truck rides Thursday, photographer Stephen Wilkes shows his day-to-night pictures at BYU Wednesday, and a free crystal and mineral show opens Friday in Spanish Fork.

β The Big One
Friday's pick Watch Caleb Teicher tap against Conrad Tao's piano in Orem
Counterpoint pairs pianist and composer Conrad Tao with dancer and choreographer Caleb Teicher, who treats tap as a musical instrument. The two trade lines through a Bach Goldberg Variation aria, Art Tatum stride piano, a Schoenberg waltz, Tao's piece More Forever and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
The show is part of the Noorda Center's Signature Series at UVU. You get a piano recital and a dance performance in one evening, with neither performer playing backup to the other.
Our take
Pick seats with a clear view of the stage floor. Teicher's footwork carries half the music, so a spot where you can see his feet matters more than being close to the piano.
β οΈ Heads up: This is a single Friday date in Orem. Buy through the Noorda's own ticket link on the UVU site rather than a resale page.

Utah City shows plans for a Broad Street shopping district in Vineyard
Utah City released plans for Broad Street, a 250,000-square-foot retail district on the former Geneva Steel site in Vineyard. The plans include dining, shops, a 3,000-seat theater and a hotel, with offices and homes above the storefronts. The street is meant to connect the Vineyard FrontRunner station to Utah Lake on foot. Design work is underway, and construction is expected to start in 2027.
Utah logs its second-highest count of flash flood warnings in 40 years
The National Weather Service office in Salt Lake City had issued 137 flash flood warnings this season as of September 23, the second-highest total in its 40 years of records. The office also issued more severe thunderstorm warnings than in any other year it has tracked. Utah County saw the danger in September, when lightning struck hikers sheltering on Mount Timpanogos.

For photographers See America's day turn to night in Stephen Wilkes photos
Photographer Stephen Wilkes presents America at 250, a talk built on five decades of his pictures of American people, landscapes and culture. He is best known for his Day to Night images, which blend hours of photographs of one scene into a single frame that moves from daylight to dark.
Our take
Go if you have ever tried to photograph a city at dusk. Each Day to Night picture is built from hours of frames of one scene, and hearing how he assembles them is the reason to buy a seat.
β οΈ Heads up: The talk runs 90 minutes in a recital hall, not a gallery. Nothing is on the walls to browse afterward.

Go at 4:30 Ride a bucket truck at the Provo Power yard
Provo City Power opens its yard for a Public Power Celebration with bucket truck rides, pole-climbing and electrical demonstrations, and games. The line crews who keep Provo's lights on run the stations.
Our take
Get there at 4:30pm. The city is handing out free food and prizes to the first 500 people, and the bucket truck line only gets longer after work lets out.
β οΈ Heads up: The demonstrations use real equipment. Keep small kids close near the pole-climbing area.

Free all three days Browse crystals and fossils free at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds
The Crystal Festival fills the fairgrounds' Tennis Courts Building for three days with vendors selling crystals, minerals, gemstones, fossils, cabochons and jewelry. Admission and parking are both free, and kids can trick-or-treat at the booths.
Our take
Come Friday morning for the widest pick. Once a standout geode or fossil sells, that vendor rarely has a second one.
β οΈ Heads up: The show is spread across small independent vendors. Carry some cash in case a booth cannot take a card.

Only with kids Ride the train at Saratoga Springs' Fall Festival
Saratoga Springs runs its Fall Festival at Shay Park Friday with a community fair, booth trick-or-treating, a pumpkin contest and a new Scarecrow Row along the train path. Train rides cost $2 and start at 5pm. A wristband covers the inflatables and petting zoo.
Our take
Skip it unless you have kids between 3 and 15. The paid wristband areas are built for them, and adults without kids will be done with the fair booths in 20 minutes.
β οΈ Heads up: Riders must be 36 inches tall for the train. Public parking is at the church east of the park, Riverview Elementary and along 400 West, not in the park lot.

Weeknight dinner Order a carne asada tampiqueΓ±a at La Costa in American Fork
La Costa has served Mexican food on State Road in American Fork for more than 20 years under the same family. The menu covers carne asada, carnitas, fajitas, enchiladas, combination plates and a house flan.
Our take
TampiqueΓ±as are one of the plates the family puts at the top of the menu. Order one, split a flan at the end, and get an agua de jamaica instead of a soda.
β οΈ Heads up: Sunday hours are shorter, noon to 8:30pm. Call 801-492-0042 before you bring a large group.

Bring blankets Watch Wallace & Gromit outside in Lindon with a free pumpkin
Lindon's Spooky Movie in the Park shows Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, rated G and 85 minutes long. The city hands out free pumpkins, treats and hot chocolate.
Our take
This is the easiest first scary movie for a small kid. The Were-Rabbit is claymation, and the scariest thing in it is a giant bunny.

A developer maps a 1,153-acre data center park in Fairfield
EGI Real Estate and DAI Utah are planning a project called GoldMine on 1,153 acres in Fairfield, west of Utah Lake near the Eagle Mountain border. The early plan sets aside 933 acres for a business park and data centers, 80 acres for commercial lots and 140 acres for homes on one- to three-acre lots. The developers say the data centers would use air cooling in a closed loop instead of water. No development application had been filed with the town.

Bring a small group Work a weekday shift at the Provo food bank
Community Action Services and Food Bank schedules individual volunteers for weekday shifts at its Provo pantry and takes groups on weekday afternoons. Sign-up runs through the food bank's online Volunteer Hub.
Our take
Bring two or three coworkers for a 2pm group shift. It is a two-hour block you can fit into a workday.
β οΈ Heads up: Create your Volunteer Hub account before you drive over so you can pick a shift that still has open spots.
